Mustard packs are a topical irritant. The effect is based on the ability of mustard essential oil to dilate skin blood vessels and act on deep tissues by warming them. The action of mustard packs is due to their irritant, soothing, and supportive effects.
The mustard pack is moistened with warm water (not above 35°C), after which heat and essential oil are released, affecting the nerve endings of the skin. This oil gives the characteristic smell and pungent taste of mustard, causes skin irritation and increased blood flow to the area, relieving irritation. Blood circulation improves under the mustard pack and metabolism accelerates. This helps reduce irritation and relieve pain.
Application recommendations: Mustard packs are intended for application to human skin as a topical irritant for conditions of the cardiovascular, bronchopulmonary systems, peripheral and central nervous system, as well as joint and spine disorders.
They are used for myositis, radiculitis, neuralgia, bronchitis, pneumonia, laryngotracheitis, headaches, etc., and also as a measure during general malaise.
Method of application: External use. Before use, shake the mustard pack horizontally to evenly distribute the powder across all four cells, without changing its position, then dip in water heated to 37°C for 15-20 seconds, and apply to the skin with the porous side. To enhance the effect, cover with a dry towel. Remove the pack if severe burning occurs. Usually, mustard packs are applied to the chest, back (under and between the shoulder blades), feet, calves, and on the neck below the occiput. It is best to apply mustard packs before sleep, as warmth should be maintained during use.
